Volkswagen Recalls Thousands of EVs Over Battery Fire Risk
Volkswagen is recalling thousands of electric vehicles globally after defective battery cells from suppliers created a risk of thermal stress and fires.
Volkswagen is recalling thousands of electric vehicles worldwide due to defective battery cells that may cause increased thermal stress and, in extreme circumstances, trigger fires. The automaker attributed the defects to production faults at its suppliers. Recall campaigns have already launched in the United States and the United Kingdom, with approximately 22,000 ID.4 vehicles affected in the U.S. alone.
Preparations for recalls are currently underway in Germany and other international markets. While the company has not officially confirmed the full list of affected models, reports indicate that the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID Buzz, and Cupra Born produced between 2023 and 2025 may be involved.
As a precaution, the company recommends that owners charge affected vehicles to a maximum of 80%. Remedial actions include battery inspections at service centers, though some defects may be resolvable through software upgrades.
