California Attorney General Deploys Resources to Protect November 3 Election

Rob Bonta released new voter protection resources and deployed state attorneys to defend California's general election against alleged federal interference and misinformation.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta released four new resources on October 28 to protect voters, poll workers, and election materials ahead of the November 3 general election. The measures include guidance for election officials on law enforcement access to voting sites, legal alerts against the seizure of election materials, bulletins on voter intimidation, and consumer alerts regarding AI-generated misinformation.

Bonta characterized these actions as a defense against what he called unprecedented attacks on elections by the Trump Administration. The state is deploying attorneys and administrative staff from the California Department of Justice to assist the Secretary of State’s Office with election law enforcement. These efforts are supported by Senate Bill 73, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which strengthens protections against law enforcement interference.

The state's actions follow a rejected attempt by the United States Department of Justice to set aside 20,000 mail-in ballots from alleged noncitizens. While the United States Department of Homeland Security stated it does not plan operations targeting polling locations, the agency maintained it will conduct targeted enforcement for public safety threats and prosecute noncitizens who cast ballots.
