Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 Bug Consuming 500GB Disk Space

Microsoft released a Windows 11 update to fix a bug causing a system log file to consume up to 500GB of disk space.

Microsoft Corporation released a fix for a Windows 11 bug that caused the system file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal to consume excessive amounts of disk space. According to a company support announcement, the file acts as a write-ahead log for application requests to access privacy-sensitive components, such as microphones and cameras. While the log typically requires only a few megabytes, a malfunction caused the file to grow up to 500GB on some affected systems, potentially filling entire hard drives and causing system instability.

Microsoft addressed the issue in the optional June 23, 2026, preview update, identified as KB5095093. The company expects the fix to be included in the general July 14 Patch Tuesday rollout for all users. The update explicitly aims to improve disk space usage for the specific database write-ahead log file.

User reports highlighted the sudden disappearance of available storage, leading many to use third-party disk analysis tools to locate the culprit. The company recommends that users identify if they are affected by checking the System & reserved storage category in settings. Alternatively, they can use the built-in Robocopy command or tools like TreeSize, WizTree, and WinDirStat to inspect the file size within the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager directory.

This bug underscores the risks of uncontrolled log file growth in modern operating systems. For affected users, installing the preview update provides an immediate resolution, while the upcoming Patch Tuesday release ensures a broader systemic fix to prevent similar storage leaks.
