Sensex and Nifty End Rally Amid New Auction Session
BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty indices closed lower Tuesday as the implementation of a new Closing Auction Session for F&O stocks triggered market volatility.
The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty benchmark indices ended a four-day rally on Tuesday, closing lower following the introduction of a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for shares with futures and options (F&O) contracts. The BSE Sensex declined 210.08 points, or 0.27 per cent, to settle at 78,428.95, while the NSE Nifty dropped 159.40 points, or 0.64 per cent, to end at 24,614.90.
The CAS mechanism became operational on Monday with the goal of increasing transparency in price discovery. However, the transition introduced volatility as investors recalibrated their positions. The downturn was further intensified by Tuesday's weekly expiry and profit-taking in index heavyweights, specifically impacting Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank, while Trent and Tata Steel gained.
Market analysts noted that the decline was a result of market mechanics rather than shifts in underlying fundamentals. Hariselvan Radhakrishnan of HST Wealth indicated that the new session added a layer of volatility to the benchmark indices during an early adjustment period.
