Samsung Clarifies Health Data AI Training Consent Policy
Samsung Electronics corrected misleading notifications that suggested users would lose cloud syncing and health data if they opted out of AI training.
Samsung Electronics introduced a consent toggle in the Samsung Health app allowing the company to use sensitive medical information for AI training and modeling. The request covers body measurements, nutrition, sleep data, prescriptions, medical diagnoses, and menstrual cycle tracking, noting that the process includes human review.
Initial notifications caused widespread concern by warning users that disabling the toggle would result in the deletion of existing health data and the loss of cloud syncing capabilities. These terms appeared to tie a core service to the consent for AI training, prompting immediate criticism from users on both Android and iOS devices.
Samsung later clarified that the original warning dialog was misleading. The company explained that health data used for core services is stored separately from the data collected for AI training. Consequently, withdrawing consent only deletes the specific data retained for AI modeling; it does not disable Samsung Cloud syncing or delete primary health records. Samsung acknowledged the ambiguity of the initial wording and stated it is updating the notice text to improve clarity for its customers.
