Nigeria Deploys 15,000 Police to Secure Osun Governorship Election

The Nigerian Police Force is deploying approximately 15,000 personnel to secure the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15. Commissioner of Police Samuel Erale Etaifo announced the mobilization in Osogbo, noting the force includes conventional officers, tactical units, the Police Mobile Force, dog handlers, and medical personnel. The deployment follows a security assessment by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, who identified heightened political tension in the region.

To prevent local interference with investigations, Etaifo declared that any individuals arrested for electoral offenses will be transferred immediately to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for prosecution. He warned politicians, security personnel, and electoral officials against ballot snatching, violence, and vote buying, asserting the force will maintain neutrality for the 14 candidates, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Simultaneously, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is deploying operatives to all 30 local government areas to monitor the polls. Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner Yusuf Olatunji led a street rally in Osogbo to warn residents that both the givers and receivers of bribes are liable for prosecution under Nigerian law. Olatunji argued that treating votes as commodities turns leadership into a transaction and damages democracy.
