Ken Paxton and James Talarico Clash Over Law Enforcement Records

Ken Paxton and James Talarico are campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat with starkly different platforms and tactical approaches. During a July 21 news conference in Fort Worth before the Sheriffs Association of Texas, Paxton accused Talarico of maintaining one of the most anti-law enforcement records in state history, specifically citing a $2,500 donation Talarico made to the Austin Justice Coalition.

Talarico denied supporting the defunding of police and accused Paxton of lying about his record. He noted that he has voted to allocate $56 billion to law enforcement and public safety agencies during his time in the legislature.

Beyond the dispute over public safety, the candidates are targeting swing voters in the Rio Grande Valley. Paxton is aligning his campaign with the agenda of Donald Trump, focusing on the Texas-Mexico border, qualified immunity for officers, and socially conservative issues regarding transgender children and sports. Conversely, Talarico is employing a big tent strategy centered on the theme love thy neighbor and a biblical reference to flipping tables to signify renewal. While Paxton has focused on personal attacks regarding Talarico's masculinity and habits, Talarico is attempting to build a broad coalition that includes former Republicans by emphasizing a fight against corruption.
