Intel Confirms Continued Role in Musk-Backed Terafab Project
Intel shares rose after CEO Lip-Bu Tan and Elon Musk confirmed Intel remains a partner in the Texas-based Terafab semiconductor complex.
Intel shares recovered on Wednesday after CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed the company will remain a partner in Terafab, a semiconductor manufacturing complex in Texas. The announcement addressed investor concerns that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) might displace Intel following reports of early-stage discussions between TSMC and Elon Musk.
Elon Musk clarified on X that his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, will build and run the facility, stating there should be "ZERO doubt about that." While Musk suggested TSMC might potentially sublease a portion of the fab, he reaffirmed the existing partnership with Intel. The Terafab project is designed to produce chips for artificial intelligence and robotics, utilizing Intel's 14A manufacturing process as the production backbone.
The project serves as a critical proof of concept for Intel's foundry business turnaround strategy. By securing high-profile external customers like Tesla and SpaceX, Intel aims to justify its heavy investments in advanced manufacturing processes and attract further large-scale orders.
