Neso Implements Rotating Power Cut Rules for Great Britain

The National Energy System Operator (Neso) has implemented new grid code rules that allow for rotating three-hour power cuts at short notice to prevent a total electricity system collapse in Great Britain. Approved by the regulator Ofgem, these measures permit Neso to disconnect homes and businesses in designated areas to reduce electricity use by more than a fifth, provided they give eight hours' notice.

This protocol serves as a last-resort contingency to stabilize the grid without invoking more extensive government emergency powers reserved for prolonged disruptions. While hospitals and national security sites are exempt, millions of households remain vulnerable during extreme supply squeezes.

The implementation follows allegations from Neso whistleblowers that senior leadership attempted to conceal blackout risks during a recent heatwave.
