U K Sinha Rejects Diluting KYC Norms to Attract Capital

Former SEBI Chairman U K Sinha stated India will not compromise regulatory standards to compete with other financial hubs, citing strong IPO exit records.

Former Securities and Exchange Board of India Chairman U K Sinha stated on Wednesday that India will not dilute essential regulatory standards, including Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance, to compete with financial hubs such as Singapore or Hong Kong. Speaking at the 4th CII Alternative Investment Fund Summit 2026 in Mumbai, Sinha argued that basic framework standards must be maintained to safeguard market integrity.

Sinha noted that while some areas require improvement, he does not believe KYC is a major hurdle for foreign investors. He expressed confidence that international capital will return as global macroeconomic pressures ease, pointing to India's track record of providing investor exits through successful IPOs as a strength compared to other markets.

Additionally, Sinha praised the Securities and Exchange Board of India for allowing the listing of Alternative Investment Fund management entities. He specifically cited the recent listing of Gaja Capital as a breakthrough for industry transparency and data disclosure, noting that such listings provide fund managers with crucial ammunition for GP commitments.
