Sioux City Rejects Police Chief Finalists to Restart Search

Sioux City officials announced on August 26, 2026, that they will not hire either of the two finalists, Scott Ebner and Robert Trebes, for the position of police chief. The decision follows public forums held in early August and a public statement from Councilmember Rick Bertrand, who advocated for restarting the search and indicated he would vote against both candidates.

City Manager Mike Collett stated that the decision was not easy, but emphasized that his priority is to ensure the best outcome and long-term success for the city's next chief. To maintain leadership during the transition, Captain Ryan Bertrand will serve as interim police chief following the retirement of Chief Rex Mueller in November 2026.

The city plans to restart the recruitment process in the spring. Officials will utilize Civic Leadership Search Partners for the new search under an existing contract.
