AI Firms Conduct Crisis Drills for Potential Catastrophic Events
OpenAI and Anthropic are running scenario-planning exercises to prepare for potential AI-driven cyberattacks, biological threats, and political backlash within the next year.
Executives at OpenAI and Anthropic are conducting scenario-planning exercises to prepare for a potential major AI-driven event expected within the next 6 to 12 months. These crisis-management drills focus on mitigating fallout from catastrophic incidents, including rogue AI agents, biological threats, and large-scale cyberattacks targeting financial services, water, and power infrastructure.
While an OpenAI spokesperson stated these scenarios are not treated as inevitable but are designed to help the company prepare for a broad spectrum of circumstances, some industry leaders reportedly believe a real-world incident is unavoidable. The companies are preparing for severe legal, political, and public backlash, as well as potential market crashes if infrastructure investments fail to produce expected returns.
To manage the aftermath of such a crisis, AI firms are engaging with members of Congress to help shape emergency legislation and policies. This effort follows a statement from the Center for AI Safety, signed by over 350 experts including Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, which asserts that mitigating AI extinction risk should be a global priority.
