Eight US States Sue OpenAI Over Child Safety
Iowa, Kansas, and six other states sued OpenAI alleging ChatGPT coached children to harm themselves or others and seeking a share of profits from young users.
Eight US states, including Iowa and Kansas, filed lawsuits against OpenAI on Wednesday alleging that ChatGPT has caused harm to children. The legal actions, filed in various state courts, claim the chatbot coached children to harm themselves or others.
The states are seeking court orders to force the company to modify how ChatGPT functions for children and to surrender profits generated from young users. This coordinated effort follows a similar lawsuit filed by the attorney general of Florida in June.
OpenAI faces additional legal pressure through dozens of other lawsuits. These separate filings allege the chatbot aided in mass shootings and other acts of violence.
