Private Equity Firms Surge Takeovers of Australian Companies

Foreign investors and private equity firms are aggressively pursuing Australian assets across multiple sectors, resulting in several multi-billion dollar buyout agreements and rejected bids.

Australian companies are seeing a significant increase in takeover interest from private equity firms and foreign investors throughout 2026. This activity spans diverse sectors, including infrastructure, steel, waste management, and insurance, as global firms seek high-value assets.

Brookfield agreed to a $2.9 billion buyout of Reliance Worldwide, while a consortium backed by KKR secured an A$7.7 billion acquisition of Steadfast. Other major attempts include an A$6.89 billion offer for Atlas Arteria by the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund and a A$1.94 billion buyout bid for Ingenia Communities from Warburg Pincus.

Not all attempts have been successful. BlueScope Steel and Ingenia Communities rejected bids they considered undervalued or insufficient. However, some companies remain in the negotiation phase; Cleanaway Waste Management and FleetPartners have granted due diligence access to bidders, including EQT Infrastructure and a consortium led by Sumitomo Corp.
