Skoda Auto Seeks Indian Partner to Boost Market Share

Skoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer announced plans to finalize a partnership with a local Indian firm by 2026 to expand electric vehicle manufacturing.

Klaus Zellmer, Global CEO of Skoda Auto, announced that the company expects to finalize a partnership with a local Indian partner by the end of 2026. The move aims to strengthen the market position of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWPL), which currently holds a 2% market share, by increasing localization and sharing investment risks.

While Zellmer did not officially name the partner, reports indicate SAVWPL is in final-stage talks with the JSW Group for a manufacturing joint venture that could involve a majority stake for the Indian conglomerate. This strategy aligns with the Volkswagen Group's plan to invest approximately 2 billion euros in India over the next decade, specifically focusing on the India Main Platform for electric vehicles.

This strategic shift comes as the broader Volkswagen Group faces intense pressure from Chinese competitors and implements significant cost-cutting measures in Germany, including planned factory closures and job cuts.
