French Guiana and Martinique Join CARICOM as Associate Members

French Guiana and Martinique have officially joined the Caribbean Community as associate members to enhance regional cooperation on health, education, and climate resilience.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expanded its membership during the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Saint Lucia, formally admitting two French overseas territories. French Guiana became the organization's eighth associate member on July 7, 2026, following an agreement signed by Gabriel Serville, President of the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana, and Philip J. Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and CARICOM Chairman.

This accession follows the entry of Martinique, which became the seventh associate member on June 16, 2026. During the summit's opening ceremony, CARICOM Secretary-General Carla Barnett formally welcomed Martinique. Serge Letchimy, President of the Executive Council in Martinique, described the membership as a beginning to spark concrete projects in investment, economic exchange, and mobility.

As associate members, both territories can participate in political discussions and cooperation programs regarding transport, tourism, health, and education. However, they possess no voting rights and cannot determine trade or foreign policy, as these authorities remain with the French Republic and the European Union. The integration is viewed as a geopolitical effort by France to increase its regional influence amid strategic growth from offshore oil discoveries in neighboring Guyana and Suriname.
