Amy Klobuchar Wins Minnesota Governor's Race
Amy Klobuchar became the first woman elected governor of Minnesota after defeating Republican Lisa Demuth in Tuesday's election.
Amy Klobuchar won the Minnesota governor's race on Tuesday, making her the first woman to hold the office. She defeated Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, who would have been the state's first Black governor.
Klobuchar will succeed two-term Governor Tim Walz, who declined to seek a third term following a massive fraud scandal in state-run social services programs. Federal prosecutors estimate that hundreds of millions, potentially exceeding $9 billion, were stolen from food, shelter, and health care programs, with many defendants being of Somali descent.
Klobuchar campaigned on a platform of auditing state government to prevent future fraud and lowering costs for child care, housing, and health care. She selected Fergus Falls Mayor Ben Schierer as her running mate for lieutenant governor. While Demuth focused her campaign on violent crime and the fraud scandal, Klobuchar held a significant financial advantage, raising over $15.5 million compared to Demuth's $3.6 million.
