OpenAI Finance Department Integrates ChatGPT Work for Automation

The finance department at OpenAI, led by CFO Sarah Friar, has integrated an AI agent called ChatGPT Work to automate financial operations and accelerate corporate decision-making. The strategic finance team utilizes the tool to audit quarter-end materials and automate monthly closes by integrating data from systems such as Databricks. These tools allow the team to complete tasks two to three times faster than previous methods.

As part of this transition, the company is moving its forecasting processes from traditional spreadsheet-based systems to statistical models. Despite these advancements, the organization maintains that underlying accounting systems and controller sign-offs remain necessary to ensure accuracy.

Head of product finance Stephanie Struck stated that while traditional accounting and analytical rigor remain essential for new hires, the company now prioritizes candidates who possess AI tool proficiency. Struck noted that employees must combine this technical skill with business judgment and the ability to challenge AI output to maintain financial integrity.
