New Brunswick MLA Reads AI Chatbot Prompts During Speech

Progressive Conservative MLA Bill Oliver inadvertently read AI-generated framing responses aloud during a speech to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. While addressing matters concerning the energy sector consumer advocate and the Office of the New Brunswick Advocate, Oliver read phrases such as "Here’s a more natural flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points" and "This version should … here’s a more developed and flowing version of the section."

Oliver appeared oblivious to the errors during the session, and other legislators did not react at the time. The incident occurred on June 9, but only gained widespread attention weeks later after videos were shared on Reddit and Threads. The gaffe subsequently drew coverage from major Canadian news outlets, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Toronto Star.

Critics have used the event to highlight a perceived lack of critical thinking among elected representatives and the risks of delegating political discourse to large language models. Oliver's office has not issued an apology or clarified whether the AI was used for the entire speech or only specific sections.
