Australia Mandates 100% Renewable Energy for New AI Data Centres
The Australian government is introducing national AI standards requiring new data centres to offset all electricity use with renewable energy to support regional digital growth.
The Australian government will introduce national AI standards by the end of the year, requiring all new data centres to offset 100 percent of their electricity consumption with renewable energy. This policy comes as the nation seeks to shift data infrastructure away from residential areas toward regional hubs to avoid community opposition.
Data Centres Australia warned that the government must accelerate renewable energy projects to match the pace of data centre development. The industry body cautioned that if the timing mismatch persists, investment capital may move overseas. The organization noted that there are currently no tax incentives for building data centres in Australia and that operators have always paid for their own energy use.
Infrastructure shifts are already underway. Telstra is investing $1.8 billion to create 30 connection points via its Aura Network to facilitate regional expansion. While The Goodman Group abandoned a $1.2 billion project in Sydney's Lane Cove due to local scrutiny, Anthropic has signed a deal for a $32 billion data hub in Queensland's Western Downs, one of the largest rural sites in the country.
