OpenAI Rebrands Data Centers as Compute Campuses
OpenAI is rebranding its data centers as compute campuses to improve public perception amid environmental concerns and upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
OpenAI is rebranding its AI data centers as "compute campuses" to better describe the scale of its infrastructure and improve public perception. The company is making this shift as data centers have become a contentious issue for voters in the United States midterm elections, with a Pew Research poll showing 54% of Americans view these facilities as harmful to the environment.
Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane indicated the company is preparing a broader effort to influence the AI debate. This strategy includes proposing AI "speed limits" and encouraging the United States to lead the development of global standards. The move coincides with an expected shift toward a more regulatory-minded government following the Tuesday midterm elections.
OpenAI describes these projects as long-term investments in energy infrastructure, computing, and skilled work. The company stated it wants the communities hosting this infrastructure to help shape the projects and share in the resulting opportunities.
