Australia Trade Surplus Drops to A$495 Million in August

Australia's trade surplus fell significantly below forecasts in August as a surge in capital goods imports outpaced growth in exports.

Australia's trade surplus narrowed to A$495 million in August, falling well short of the A$2 billion forecast by economists. According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the surplus declined from A$1.35 billion in July because imports grew at a faster rate than exports.

Exports increased 3.7% to A$47.43 billion, supported by a 20.2% rise in non-monetary gold and a 4.7% increase in coal. However, imports climbed 5.8% to A$46.94 billion. This growth was primarily driven by a 22.3% increase in capital goods, including a 79.3% jump in automatic data-processing equipment.

The trade figures follow a 25 basis point cash rate hike to 4.60% by the Reserve Bank of Australia, an action taken to address capacity pressures and inflation. While the August headline consumer price index rose 4.0% year-on-year, which was slightly below expectations, analysts from ANZ anticipate another interest rate hike in November.
