Belgian Safety Group Reports Tesla FSD Speeding Violations

The Belgian road-safety advocacy group Johanna.be reported that Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system frequently exceeds speed limits and attempts illegal overtakes of cyclists. During a three-day test in July covering 400 km around Brussels, the group found that FSD often averaged 44 km/h in 30 km/h zones. The group noted that the system incorrectly displayed 50 km/h limits to drivers even when it recognized the correct signs, a behavior described as akin to a passenger constantly reminding a driver of a higher speed limit while passing through 30-zone areas.

While the tests indicated the system behaved courteously toward pedestrians, Johanna.be urged the Flemish transportation ministry and the Dutch regulator RDW to reassess their approvals of the technology. Tesla has previously released a study claiming FSD-enabled vehicles do not speed excessively and instead match the speeds of surrounding traffic.

Xavier Lesenne, a spokesperson for the Flemish government's transportation ministry, defended the technology as a learning system that continuously processes new information. He emphasized that the human driver remains 100 percent responsible for intervening during system errors.
