Unsealed Documents Reveal Murdoch Family Battle Over Media Empire

Unsealed Nevada court documents detail the legal conflicts and billion-dollar payouts that secured Lachlan Murdoch's control of Fox and News Corp.

Unsealed court documents from Nevada have revealed the internal conflicts and legal battles that preceded the appointment of Lachlan Murdoch as the successor to the Murdoch media empire. The records detail how Rupert Murdoch viewed his son James as a troublemaker and feared that assets including Fox and News Corp would fall into the wrong hands if Lachlan did not lead the companies.

To preserve a conservative media voice, Rupert Murdoch attempted to modify a family trust to ensure Lachlan's control. When the proposal initially failed, the dispute moved to the courts. Nevada probate commissioner Edmund Gorman found that Lachlan had lacked candor and provided false information to his father regarding James's interactions with a reporter to secure his position.

The conflict concluded in 2025 when Lachlan secured control of the business. This resolution involved paying Elisabeth, James, and Prudence Murdoch an estimated $1.1 billion each for their respective shares in the family empire.
