Privy Council Schedules Jamaica Slavery Reparations Hearing for 2027
The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear Jamaica's petition for slavery reparations from the United Kingdom in March 2027.
The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council has provisionally scheduled a hearing for the week of March 8, 2027, to address a petition from Jamaica seeking legal determinations on slavery reparations from the United Kingdom.
Filed on September 7, 2026, the petition asks whether the forced transport and enslavement of Africans in Jamaica were lawful, if these acts constituted crimes against humanity or breached international law, and if the United Kingdom is obligated to provide restitution. The matter reached the Privy Council after King Charles III referred the legal questions following Jamaica's activation of a mechanism in the Judicial Committee Act 1833.
The Government of the United Kingdom has until November 20, 2026, to file its case. A government spokesperson has already maintained a firm position, stating that the UK "does not and will not pay reparations."
