WhatsApp Launches Browser-Based Calling and Call Management Tools
WhatsApp introduces web-based calling, call transfers, and waiting rooms to enhance its voice and video communication features across different devices.
WhatsApp launched browser-based calling, allowing users to make and receive one-on-one and group audio and video calls directly through a web browser. This update removes the requirement for users to download a desktop application and includes a dedicated Calls tab for history and favorites, as well as support for reactions and screen-sharing. All web calls maintain end-to-end encryption.
Alongside web calling, the platform introduced a call transfer feature that enables users to move active group calls between devices without disconnecting. The company also rolled out a waiting room function, which requires hosts to approve or deny participants who attempt to join a call via a link.
To improve technical quality, the platform is deploying QuickHD for immediate high-definition video at the start of calls and noise suppression to eliminate background audio in loud environments. These five updates are being rolled out gradually to the global user base.
