Tech Leaders Warn AI Adoption Outpaces Corporate Governance

Technology executives and researchers warn that rapid AI integration is creating critical security blind spots and governance gaps across global enterprises.

On AI Appreciation Day, July 16, 2026, a coalition of technology leaders from companies including New Relic, Barracuda, and GitLab warned that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is outpacing corporate governance and security controls. Peter Marelas of New Relic identified a critical shift from conversational tools to AI agents capable of machine reasoning, noting that these systems can now reason through multi-step problems.

Security risks are central to the current discourse. Matt Caffrey of Barracuda cautioned against shadow AI, where employees use unapproved tools, while George Harb of OpenText warned that AI agents often inherit user privileges, creating new pathways for breaches. These concerns are mirrored in research from DigiCert, which found that 81% of Australian organizations have experienced an AI-related security incident or identified vulnerabilities. The study revealed a stark gap in oversight: while 76% of firms deployed four or more AI systems in the last six months, only 46.4% have formal governance programs.

Operational challenges also persist in software development. Manav Khurana of GitLab reported that 43% of organizations cannot distinguish AI-generated code from human-written code, risking increased technical debt. Consequently, leaders from Gigamon and Smartsheet are calling for a shift toward measurable business outcomes and redesigned operating models. To combat these risks, 81% of surveyed organizations have begun assigning unique digital identities to AI agents to improve accountability.
