KG Growth Partners Proposes AI Exhibit for San Francisco Mall

KG Growth Partners proposes converting the shuttered San Francisco Centre mall into a community-based AI exhibit and regenerative energy center.

Maryland-based development firm KG Growth Partners is proposing the conversion of the shuttered San Francisco Centre mall into an AI-focused project. CEO Jared Krieger describes the plan as a cohesive, community-based AI exhibit rather than a traditional server-based datacenter. The design includes a rooftop park and dedicated spaces for education, sports, retail, culture, and design.

As part of the proposal, the former Bloomingdale’s space would become an AI-controlled living space intended for public interaction. Krieger characterizes the project as a regenerative urban energy center that recycles power and water to provide public benefits. He argues the project is designed to support the city's vision and invite people downtown to support local businesses.

The project faces immediate regulatory challenges. Mayor Daniel Lurie recently signed a 45-day moratorium on datacenter development to allow the city planning department to research community impacts. While the developers emphasize public use, some local business owners have expressed concern that a datacenter would fail to attract the foot traffic necessary to sustain neighborhood shops.
