Fenway Sports Group Sells 30% Liverpool FC Stake to Consortium
Fenway Sports Group sold a minority stake in Liverpool FC to a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, including investors Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin.
Fenway Sports Group sold approximately 30% of Liverpool FC to 1892 Holdings, an investment consortium led by businessman Amit Bhatia. The investment group includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin via EE Capital and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is the lead investor in K5 Sports. This transaction marks the first sports team investment for Bezos.
Valuation estimates for the club vary between $6 billion and $7.1 billion. The agreement provides the consortium an option to acquire a controlling stake within the next 12 months at a valuation of approximately $8 billion. While FSG maintains control of day-to-day operations, the club's board will expand to include Amit Bhatia, who becomes vice chairman, as well as Bryan Baum of K5 Sports and Elaine Saverin of EE Capital. Jeff Bezos will have no functional role in the organization.
Mike Gordon, president of FSG, stated that the decision was made with the club's long-term interests in mind, noting that the consortium shares the organization's philosophy. Amit Bhatia described the partnership as a privilege and expressed confidence in the club's leadership.
