Staffing Shortages at Sydney Airport Delay Over 270 Flights

More than 270 flights at Sydney airport experienced significant delays over two consecutive days on August 7 and 8, 2026. On Saturday alone, over 150 international and domestic flights were disrupted, including 95 from the Qantas network and several Virgin Australia flights. This followed a similar pattern on Friday, which saw more than 120 delays.

Airservices Australia attributed the disruptions to roster constraints, which forced the agency to implement traffic-flow management measures such as spacing out departures. The organization stated it is enhancing its training pipeline to increase controller numbers and improve roster depth.

Stephen Beckett, CEO of Airlines for Australia and New Zealand, criticized the staffing failures as preventable, noting that the issues were apparent three days in advance. Federal Transport Minister Catherine King confirmed her office has requested a formal explanation and a pathway for service improvement from the agency, stating that while safety measures remained in place, Airservices needs to manage disruptions more effectively.
