European Heatwave Destroys 9 Million Tonnes of Grain Crops

A record-breaking heatwave in June 2026 destroyed an estimated 9 million tonnes of grain crops across the United Kingdom and 27 EU member states. The European cereals and oilseeds trade association, Coceral, reduced production forecasts from 57.2 million tons to 52.7 million tons, marking the smallest harvest for the region since 2018. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit estimates the loss in productivity revenue at approximately 2 billion euros.

France suffered the heaviest impact, losing 3.4 million tonnes of maize, followed by Hungary with 2.4 million tonnes and Spain with 1.4 million tonnes. In response, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu convened an interministerial meeting to assess the damage. French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard characterized the national agriculture sector as being in "crisis mode."

The shortfall is expected to increase European dependence on grain imports from Brazil and Ukraine while hindering France's capacity to export feed to Africa. The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and the ECIU attribute these unprecedented heat extremes to human-induced climate change. The situation is further complicated by simultaneous severe droughts in the southern and western United States, which are tightening global crop supplies and potentially driving up commodity prices.
