Australia Extends KPMG Ban After Procurement Failure Report
The Department of Finance extended a ban on new KPMG contracts after an independent report detailed systemic failures in government procurement and unethical firm conduct.
An independent report released by Dr. Ian Watt on October 22, 2026, detailed systemic failures within the Commonwealth procurement framework and unethical conduct by KPMG. The findings follow a whistleblower scandal involving allegations that KPMG audit staff misused confidential client data to secure government contracts. Watt warned that a lack of assurance mechanisms allows unethical suppliers to continue winning contracts and noted that federal agencies continued paying KPMG millions of dollars despite an existing ban on new work.
In response to the findings, the Department of Finance extended the ban on new KPMG contracts until March 1, 2027, and placed the firm under a three-year monitoring framework. While the department agreed to most recommendations regarding KPMG's internal controls, it only noted recommendations intended to strengthen broader government oversight of the supplier code of conduct.
KPMG leadership accepted the report's findings and committed to cultural and governance reforms. The firm's leadership stated that the report highlights the hard work required to address their failings and emphasized that confidence must be earned through evidence of lasting change.
