UK Government Cuts EV Charging VAT to Zero

The government announced a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on home electric vehicle charging from 5% to zero, effective October 1. This policy is projected to save a typical household approximately £45 annually and will cost £850 million during the current financial year. The measure applies to customers in England, Scotland, and Wales, while Northern Ireland will receive equivalent funding to comply with EU regulations.

Jonathan Reynolds described the funding for the cut as a "straightforward switch spend," noting that the change should provide citizens with "breathing space." The government intends to finance the VAT reduction by canceling the Digital ID programme.

The policy has drawn criticism from political opponents. Mel Stride challenged the legitimacy of the funding source, stating that the budget cuts to the Digital ID card programme were not real because the money had never been provided. Additionally, Darren Jones argued that the government must clarify how it intends to pay for its new policies during the upcoming budget.
