UN Warns Drone Strikes Cripple Sudan Civilian Infrastructure

UN Coordinator Denise Brown warns that intensifying drone strikes on Sudan's energy and fuel infrastructure are halting medical treatments and blocking humanitarian aid deliveries.

Intensifying drone attacks across Sudan have killed at least 14 civilians and crippled critical energy and fuel infrastructure, triggering widespread power cuts and disrupting clean water supplies. Recent strikes targeted markets and residential areas in West Kordofan, South Kordofan, and the Blue Nile region, including a fuel station in El Abbasiya Tagali. The League of Arab States attributed these repeated attacks on energy facilities to the Rapid Support Forces, warning that such targeting may constitute war crimes.

Denise Brown, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, reported that these strikes have halted lifesaving medical services, including dialysis, and stranded hundreds of humanitarian aid trucks due to fuel shortages. The World Food Programme noted that seven convoys were hit this year alone, contributing to severe acute malnutrition that exceeds emergency thresholds in many regions.

The humanitarian crisis is further compounded by severe rainfall deficits in Darfur and Kordofan and reports of thousands of incidents of conflict-related sexual violence, including atrocities in El-Fasher. Brown urged the international community to provide urgent funding and intervene to stop the fighting, emphasizing that the crisis is about the needs of the people rather than politics.
