Aaron Sorkin Warns Against Tech Billionaire Influence in Government
Aaron Sorkin warns that tech billionaires act as oligarchs using campaign contributions to influence U.S. lawmakers and undermine democracy.
Screenwriter and director Aaron Sorkin warned that the frequent presence of tech billionaires at the White House should alarm the American public. Speaking on Morning Joe and the program Money, Power, Politics With Stephanie Rhule, Sorkin characterized these individuals as tech oligarchs who use massive campaign contributions to influence lawmakers and secure their own interests.
Sorkin specifically identified Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk as figures funding political powers to maintain influence. He asserted that the impact of Facebook on democracy is an unprecedented and real problem, noting that little has changed since original leaks regarding the platform's handling of misinformation and addictive algorithms.
These warnings coincide with the theatrical release of Sorkin's film The Social Reckoning. The movie depicts the efforts of whistleblower Frances Haugen and reporter Jeff Horwitz to expose the internal operations of Meta Platforms Incorporated.
