Mastercard Integrates Open USD Stablecoin for Cross-Border Payments
Mastercard is integrating the Open USD stablecoin to eliminate delays and fee opacity in corporate cross-border money movements.
Mastercard is expanding its digital currency infrastructure by becoming one of four integration paths for the Open USD (OUSD) stablecoin. Launched by Open Standard on September 30, OUSD is designed as a money movement stablecoin intended to streamline corporate transactions.
Michael Miebach, CEO of Mastercard, stated that stablecoins can resolve the delays and fee opacity common in traditional cross-border payments. He noted that the ability to move money instantly would be significantly better for a company from a working capital perspective. Miebach clarified that Mastercard will focus its stablecoin initiatives on the movement of money rather than investment.
This integration follows a series of strategic moves to enhance digital currency capabilities. In August, Mastercard partnered with Borderless.xyz to support trusted cross-border transactions. The company also acquired the cryptocurrency infrastructure platform BVNK to enable seamless interoperability between fiat and digital currencies. Mastercard joins Stripe, Coinbase, and Visa as the primary integration paths for the OUSD stablecoin.
