UK Considers V2G Credits to Ease EV Mandate Fines

The United Kingdom government is reviewing incentives that would grant car manufacturers credits for installing vehicle-to-grid technology in electric vehicles.

The Government of the United Kingdom is considering a review of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate to provide incentives for car manufacturers that integrate vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This technology allows electric vehicles to act as power plants on wheels, charging during low-cost periods and selling electricity back to the grid during peak demand. The National Energy System Operator forecasts that V2G could provide 1.2 gigawatts of power by 2030 and 41 GW by 2050.

Under the proposed plan, manufacturers would earn credits for installing V2G hardware. These credits could be used to offset ZEV targets, effectively allowing companies to sell more petrol vehicles without facing financial penalties.

Industry representatives and environmental groups have criticized the proposal. Ben Nelmes of New Automotive argued that rewards should be based on the actual usage of the technology rather than mere installation to ensure benefits reach drivers and billpayers. Similarly, Vicky Edmonds of the Electric Vehicle Association England stated that it is too early to grant credits for technology that has not been tested at scale in the real world.
