US Authorities Intercept Smuggling Vessel With 22 Migrants in Florida

The United States Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a 27-foot smuggling vessel near Angelfish Creek, Florida, on Tuesday. The vessel carried 22 illegal immigrants, including 13 Chinese nationals, eight Ecuadorian nationals, and one Dominican national. Authorities also apprehended one Cuban national as a suspected smuggler.

Officials described the use of Caribbean maritime routes as rare and extremely dangerous, particularly for Chinese nationals, who typically attempt to enter the United States via land routes in California and Texas. Following the interdiction, the migrants were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pablo Valent for processing.

Andres Blanco, Executive Director of Air and Marine Operations Southeast Region, stated that attempting to enter the country illegally by sea will not go undetected and that those who attempt such voyages face arrest, prosecution, and removal. The operation occurred shortly before a scheduled meeting in Washington, D.C., between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
