Sami Truth Commission Urges Sweden to Apologize for Injustices

The Truth Commission for the Sami People presented its final report to the Swedish government on September 30, 2026, in Östersund. The report documents centuries of state-led injustices against the indigenous Sami people, including the suppression of their faith and culture, the forced removal of children to boarding schools, and forced relocations.

The commission provided 71 proposals urging the government, museums, the Church of Sweden, and other authorities to acknowledge historical wrongs and provide compensation. Key recommendations include a formal state apology and the implementation of stronger land-use protections for reindeer herding, which currently faces threats from forestry, mining, and green energy projects.

While the commission lacked a formal mandate to propose specific reconciliation efforts, the Sami Parliament expects a reconciliation process to follow the findings. This investigation follows similar historical reckonings conducted in Finland and Norway.
