Saskatchewan Businesses Brace for 50 Percent U.S. Tariffs

Saskatchewan businesses prepare for potential 50 percent U.S. tariffs as Canada and the United States face a Wednesday midnight trade negotiation deadline.

Businesses in Saskatchewan are preparing for the potential imposition of 50 percent tariffs by the Federal government of the United States if a trade deal with Canada is not finalized by a Wednesday midnight deadline.

Local enterprises, including honey producers, wig retailers, and trampoline manufacturers, warn that these tariffs would force price increases for consumers and complicate export processes. Some companies are already managing 25 percent steel tariffs and increased administrative burdens for customs paperwork. To mitigate risk, several exporters are diversifying their markets to include Japan and China.

While the Treasury Board of Canada continues negotiations to avoid the tariffs, some industry leaders remain skeptical. Forest Saskatchewan warned that forestry products might be excluded from the final agreement due to long-standing lobbying efforts by U.S. lumber associations.
