Guardian Investigation Reveals Surge in British Cocaine Use

The Guardian reports a significant rise in cocaine use across Britain, linked to increased domestic abuse and a 26% increase in sewage drug levels.

An investigation by The Guardian reveals that cocaine use in Britain has shifted from a luxury item to an everyday habit common in workplaces, pubs, and festivals. Data analyzed by journalists Robyn Vinter and Michael Goodier shows a 10% increase in cocaine-related crimes since 2019.

Home Office wastewater analysis indicates a 26% rise in cocaine levels in sewage between 2021 and 2025. This surge is linked to record deaths and a rise in domestic abuse; nearly 60% of police drug tests for individuals arrested on domestic abuse suspicions tested positive for cocaine between July 2025 and June 2026.

Contributing factors include plummeting drug prices. The investigation further notes that people in their 30s now constitute the largest age group seeking help for problematic drug use.
