OpenAI Buys Thousands of Macs to Train AI Agents

OpenAI purchased tens of thousands of Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio systems to train AI agents designed to autonomously operate computers and interact with software. The company is using these devices for reinforcement learning, a trial-and-error process that enables AI to improve by navigating user interfaces and completing multi-step tasks.

Anthropic is adopting a similar strategy by renting Mac minis through Amazon Web Services. These Apple devices are preferred for these specific workloads because the M-series chips feature a Unified Memory Architecture. This design allows the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine to share a single memory pool, which increases efficiency and reduces data movement.

While these systems are not replacing Nvidia GPU data centers for large-scale training, they provide a specialized niche for AI development. This trend contributed to a nearly 29 percent year-on-year increase in Apple's Mac revenue, which reached 10.3 billion dollars in the latest quarter.
