HMRC Warns Parents to Confirm Education Status for Child Benefit
HM Revenue and Customs warns parents of 16 to 19-year-olds to confirm education enrollment by August 31 to avoid losing Child Benefit payments.
The HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a deadline of August 31 for parents of 16 to 19-year-olds to confirm their children are enrolled in approved non-advanced education or training. Failure to provide this confirmation will result in the automatic cessation of Child Benefit payments.
The warning follows the release of GCSE results on August 20, a period when families typically finalize plans for A levels, T levels, Scottish Highers, or NVQs up to level 3. Child Benefit provides up to £1,406.60 annually for the eldest or only child and up to £930.80 for additional children. More than 372,000 parents have already extended their claims through the GOV.UK website or the HMRC app.
HMRC officials cautioned that parents must also report immediately if a child leaves education or starts a paid apprenticeship to avoid overpayments. Myrtle Lloyd, the agency's Chief Customer Officer, urged parents to use digital services to ensure they continue receiving the support to which they are entitled.
