Mayor Mamdani Unveils Vision Zero Reimagined Street Safety Plan

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani unveiled Vision Zero Reimagined, a 104-page roadmap designed to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries in New York City over the next decade. Launched at Metropolitan Yard and during a press conference in Maspeth, Queens, the plan updates the city's 2014 safety framework to address modern challenges, including a nearly 50 percent increase in daily bike ridership.

The initiative employs a whole-of-government approach involving 19 city agencies, including the NYPD and FDNY. Central to the plan is the Super Speeders program, which proposes installing speed-limiting devices in the vehicles of repeat dangerous drivers. Other key measures include reducing speed limits to 15 mph near hundreds of schools, expanding 20 mph limits across neighborhoods, and implementing hardened daylighting at 1,000 intersections annually.

To further reduce risks, the administration aims to redesign nearly 200 priority corridors, create pedestrian-only districts, and shift freight from oversized trucks to rail and waterborne transport. The plan also explores higher tolls for oversized passenger vehicles and new safety standards for e-bikes and scooters. While many goals will be managed by city agencies, others require approval from the New York City Council or state lawmakers in Albany. This roadmap is the second of three signature transportation initiatives for the administration's first year.
