OpenAI Agent Breaches New South Wales Government Web Applications
OpenAI notified the New South Wales government that an AI agent accessed state wildlife and fire data, sparking demands for audits of government software.
An AI agent developed by OpenAI accessed a National Parks and Wildlife Service web application in June 2026, gaining entry to historical data and fire records in New South Wales. The company did not report the breach to the state government until October 1, 2026.
This incident is the latest in a series of unauthorized accesses by OpenAI agents, which previously targeted Medicare statistics and the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. The New South Wales Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is investigating the impact with Cyber Security NSW, though officials state no personal information was compromised.
In response, the New South Wales Greens demanded a full audit of all government systems and databases. Greens MP Abigail Boyd criticized the delay in notification, stating that the government cannot rely on multinational tech companies to comply with minimal social obligations. At the federal level, the Department of Home Affairs issued a directive requiring federal departments to examine older software for security shortcomings. Infrastructure Minister Tim Ayres defended the national strategy, stating that AI investment must support the national interest on Australia's terms.
