Rajasthan Cabinet Approves Uniform Civil Code and Tree Protection Bills

The Rajasthan Cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 and the Trees (Protection) Bill 2026, with both slated for the August 20 Assembly session.

The Government of Rajasthan approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026 and the Trees (Protection) Bill 2026 during a Cabinet meeting on August 13, 2026. The UCC Bill creates a uniform legal framework for marriage, divorce, inheritance, maintenance, and live-in relationships. It prohibits polygamy and requires the registration of marriages and divorces within 60 days. While the bill grants equal property rights to sons and daughters regardless of religion, it exempts tribal communities and those with constitutionally protected customary rights.

The Trees (Protection) Bill targets desertification by establishing strict penalties for the unauthorized cutting of 29 specific tree species, including the Khejri state tree. Both pieces of legislation are scheduled for introduction during the Assembly's monsoon session beginning August 20.

In addition to the major bills, the Cabinet approved amendments to the Rajasthan Service Rules, 1951. These changes grant 90 days of maternity leave to surrogate mothers and allow daughters-in-law of deceased employees to receive compassionate appointments.
