President Nicusor Dan Designates Siegfried Muresan as Prime Minister

President Nicusor Dan designated Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Muresan as Romania's prime minister-designate on September 21, 2026. The decision followed consultations at the Cotroceni Palace, where Dan stated that Muresan received the most votes from attending parties and possesses the necessary expertise. Muresan now has ten days to present a government program and a list of ministers to Parliament for a vote of confidence.

Muresan announced plans to reform state-owned companies, reduce public waste, and propose a voluntary merger of communes. However, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) National Standing Bureau decided on Monday not to support the proposed government. Muresan criticized the PSD leadership, claiming they do not want an end to the political crisis, and challenged the party to choose between joining a pro-European Union government or partnering with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).

The political instability has drawn international scrutiny. President Dan reported that American investors in New York expressed greater concern over Romania's current political situation than its financial indicators.
