Russian AI Drones Using Nvidia Chips Kill Three Civilians
Russian autonomous drones using consumer-grade Nvidia hardware killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, marking the first documented case of fully autonomous targeting deaths.
A Russian drone guided by an experimental autonomous artificial intelligence system killed three civilians, including a 19-year-old student, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, on July 6. Forensic analysis by Ukrainian intelligence and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine revealed the drone used a consumer-grade Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputer to make independent targeting decisions. While human operators directed the drone toward a gas station, the AI autonomously selected its final target, likely propane tanks, based on machine learning training.
Investigations into wreckage from May to July 2026 show that Russia has been testing these systems on recruitment centers and civilian infrastructure to refine the technology. The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine also identified the same Nvidia hardware in S-71M Monochrome missiles. Unlike previous systems requiring human confirmation, these weapons leave strike decisions entirely to the AI.
Nvidia Corporation confirmed the Jetson Orin is a consumer-grade product designed for students and developers rather than military use. The company stated it does not sell directly to Russia but acknowledged the chips are available through resellers, making them difficult to track. Serhiy Minaiev, commander of air defenses in Zaporizhzhia, warned that Russia is using these attacks to fix mistakes in the technology, describing the shift toward machines making strike decisions as a risk for the entire world.
