Massachusetts House Strips Gas Tax Holiday From Budget
The Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee removed a proposed gas tax suspension from a $2.35 billion supplemental spending bill.
The Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee removed a proposed two-month suspension of the 24-cent-per-gallon state gas tax from a $2.35 billion supplemental spending bill. Maura Healey, the Governor of Massachusetts, had proposed the tax holiday to provide financial relief to residents facing high pump prices linked to conflict in Iran and the policies of President Donald Trump.
House leadership, including Speaker Ronald Mariano, rejected the proposal on the grounds that it would reduce infrastructure funding and might not ensure that savings are passed on to consumers. The revised budget instead prioritizes funding for MassHealth, the life sciences sector, and maternal mental health services, while introducing bans on deceptive AI-generated media in political advertising.
Republican challenger Mike Minogue and the Massachusetts Republican Party criticized the governor's proposal as a political stunt and an election ploy designed to mimic Minogue's own platform. The full House is scheduled to vote on the supplemental budget this Wednesday.
