Leeds and the Thousand Islands Certifies October Municipal Election

The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands has certified its candidate field for the municipal election scheduled for October 26. Incumbent Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke is seeking a third term, facing a challenge from Jason Page. This marks the first time the mayoral seat has been contested in the township since 2018.

Smith-Gatcke, who also serves as warden of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, is campaigning on her record of asset management, infrastructure projects, and the maintenance of low municipal tax rates. She has noted that her tenure involved managing budgeting challenges and significant staff and council turnover.

Beyond the mayoral race, 10 candidates are competing for six council seats across three wards. The current council has experienced high turnover, with four of the six sitting councillors having been appointed to fill vacancies and now seeking formal election to their positions.
